Our Learning Adventures for the Week:
Phonics: This week we will introduce Closed-Syllable Patterns.A closed syllable is a syllable that ends with a consonant. The words fan, am, and left have closed syllables. Multi-syllabic words have closed syllables too. For example, a two-syllable word with the vowel-consonant-consonant-vowel pattern may have one or two closed syllables Remember that we will take a dictation assessment at the end of each week.
Here are the spelling words:
shock, fish, chunk, rock, trunk, dish, napkin, magnet, basket, jacket
Reading: We will continue looking through books/stories and discussing the main idea and details. The students will also get practice on asking and answering questions. You may know this as the who, what, when, where, why and how questions. This is a good skill to practice when reading at home as well.
Grammar: Each week we will be using mentor sentences to guide us through our grammar lessons. At the end of each week, there will be an assessment on the skill. Make sure and review any skills missed on this paper. This week's focus is plural nouns.
Writing: We will continue learning about narrative writing and discussing how a checklist can help. As we continue to practice the routines of writing, we will review how to revise writing. A good way to revise this week at home is making sure that each sentence has a capital letter and punctuation. .
Math: This week's focus in Math is skip counting by 5's, 10's, & 100's. "Skip Counting" is counting by a number that is not 1. Learning to "Skip Count" helps you count many things quickly and learn your multiplication tables. Continue practicing at home skip counting by 5"s, 10"s, & 100's.
Science: This week we will go from learning about solids, liquids, & gases to learning how they can change. The students will participate in several experiments this week and see how solids can change to a liquid and how a liquid can become a solid and also a gas. Assessment for matter will be on Thursday.
This week in class, the counselor, Mrs. Plomaritis, will be visiting our classrooms to introduce herself and explain what a counselor does.
