Our Learning Adventures for the Week:
Phonics- The spelling pattern we will focus on is the CVCe pattern. We will discuss how the e at the end of the word changes the vowel sound. The students might recognize this pattern as bossy e, magic e, or sleepy e from previous years. Spelling words to practice at home this week are: crate, stroke, glide, woke, plate, pride, reptile, naptime and mistake. Please practice other words that follow this pattern as well. The weeks spelling dictation will have a mixture of the practiced spelling words, as well as words we will have practiced during instruction time to see your child's application of the pattern.
Reading-We will continue work with the reading skill of asking and answering questions. To apply this skill we will continue to look deeper into stories by using close reading. This is when we read a text multiple times with so we can ask questions as well as identify their answers within the text. We will go a little deeper this week by adding in problem and solution and modeling how to answer a constructed response question from using the text read as a source.
Grammar- The focus for the mentor sentence this week is plural nouns again. Last week we discussed the -s and -es ending, this week we will focus on the -ies ending. The students are getting really comfortable with mentor sentences!
Writing- We will be discussing what makes a good sentence this week, a capital to start and punctuation to end, strong details, a clear meaning and fancy words. The students are still producing personal narrative pieces but we will start to focus in on a small moment within their story. Example: Not the whole trip to the beach just a certain part....building a sandcastle or searching for seashells.
Math- We will begin a new unit of addition and subtraction strategies. The strategies that we will be reviewing are fact families, counting on and counting back, doubles, doubles +1 and make a 10. In addition to these strategies we will also start to discuss the format we use for problem solving called the 4 square. The students used this strategy last year in 1st. Each square represents a part of their solution....a representation in pictures, number sentence, strategy and then an explanation in words.
Social Studies- This week we will discuss Georgia's different regions, Appalachian Plateau, Valley & Ridge, Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont (where we live :) ) and the Coastal Plain. We will end our study with a fun cake decorating activity on Friday!
