Our Learning Adventures for the Week:

Mrs. Plomaritis will be visiting our classrooms this week to talk about creating a peaceful school. We will celebrate our “Day of Peace” at Davis on September 22nd.

Phonics- The spelling pattern we will focus on the open-syllable pattern. You can tell that a word follows the open-syllable pattern if the syllables end with a vowel. These syllables often have a long vowel sound. Spelling words to practice at home this week are: cry, go, fly, so, robot, she, we, baby, and tidy. Please practice other words that follow this pattern as well. Our spelling dictation test will have a mixture of the practiced spelling words, as well as words we will have practiced during instruction time to see your child's application of the pattern.

Reading- We will test our knowledge of finding the main idea by asking and answering questions.

We will continue work with the reading skill of asking and answering questions. We will be working on our reading fluency as we focus on our speed/pacing. We will build our fluency by working with the same passage over the week.

Grammar- The focus for the mentor sentence this week is irregular plural nouns. The past few weeks we discussed the -s and -es ending, and the -ies ending. This week we will learn about the words that do not follow these rules.

Writing- We will be discussing what a small moment is. A small moment is when we take a specific part of a memory and write about it. For example instead of writing about a whole vacation we encourage the students to pick a small moment from the trip to focus on; that may be a favorite activity that they did or it could be how they got there. By focusing on a small moment we are able to add more detail into our writing and be more specific. We will also be working on beginnings and endings of our writing; learning that we can start and end our writing in different ways.

Math- We will continue to fine tune our knowledge of addition and subtraction strategies. The strategies that we are working on are fact families, counting on and counting back, doubles, doubles +1 and make a 10. We are going to be doing more with our 4 square problem solving. Representing our answer with a picture, numbers, strategy, and explaining in words. This week we will be introducing money. The students will learn the value of a quarter, nickel, dime, and penny as well as how to count coins.

*Timed Math Fact test will be on Thursday.

Social Studies- This week we will discuss Georgia's different rivers. Students will learn where Georgia's major rivers are located.
