Our Learning Adventures for the Week:

Phonics- The spelling pattern we will focus on the long a diagraph. You can tell that a word follows the pattern when the vowel says the long a sound. Some words will even have 2 vowels together to make the long a sound! Spelling words to practice at home this week are: train, stay, eight, sprain, tray, freight, complain, obey, raisin, and mailbox. Please practice other words that follow this pattern as well. Our spelling dictation test will have a mixture of the practiced spelling words, as well as words we will have practiced during instruction time to see your child's application of the pattern.

Reading- We will begin two new strategies this week. One involves analyzing the characters in a story. We can watch how the characters change in a story by looking at their feelings, actions, what they are saying, and thoughts. The next strategy is visualization. This involves students creating mental pictures of what is being read.

Grammar- The focus for the mentor sentence this week is collective nouns. Collective nouns are a group of something such as a group of cows is a herd. Look for collective nouns during the week at home.

Writing- We will be writing about our small moments this week. A small moment is when we take a specific part of a memory and write about it. For example instead of writing about a whole vacation we encourage the students to pick a small moment from the trip to focus on; that may be a favorite activity that they did or it could be how they got there. The teachers will model story writing organization so the students can have complete stories with a main idea, lots of details, and a good ending or closing. By the end of the week, the students will have produced a writing piece of their own!

Math- Money!! The students are identifying coins and their value. Coins included are penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. We will also begin counting coins to find different money amounts. After making amounts, we will use this information to begin word problems. Have your child practice counting coins at home.

Social Studies- We are learning about our first Georgia hero. Sequoyah is a Native American from Georgia. We will learn about his character traits and why he is important.
