Learning Focuses this week:

Phonics: The spelling pattern we will focus on the long e digraph. You can tell that a word follows the pattern when the vowel says the long e sound. Some words will even have 2 vowels together to make the long e sound! Spelling words to practice at home this week are: dream, field, yield, cream, field, wheel, greedy, increase, relief. Please practice other words that follow this pattern as well. Our spelling dictation test will have a mixture of the practiced spelling words, as well as words we will have practiced during instruction time to see your child's application of the pattern.

Reading: We will be finishing up the quarter with continued practice with character analysis and understanding the overall structure of a story. For character analysis our focus is on identifying character traits, how a character changes from the beginning of a story to the end and what caused the change. When we look at the overall structure of a story, our focus is acknowledging that each story has a clear beginning, middle and end.

Grammar: We will be practicing using context clues, known words within a text, to identify the meaning of unknown words. We will be practicing this using a variety of texts throughout the week.

Writing: Students will be producing a final personal narrative from start to finish independently. Students will be using a graphic organizer to come up with ideas, feelings and details, producing the organizer into a piece of writing, and editing with a buddy using a checklist. We are excited to read all of their narratives! The second grade teachers are anticipating a lot of new ideas coming out of the fall break week off!

Math: Students will be working on one step problem solving to 20. We will be following the same model we used during money problem solving. Your child will recognize this as a 4 square where they are to produce a picture, number sentence, strategy and explanation in words as to how they found their solution.

Social Studies: Students will have a choice to build a Creek home, a Cherokee home, or a piece of clothing. They will have a choice to work in partners or individually and have certain guidelines to follow. We will finish up our Creek and Cherokee Indian unit by having an in-house field trip on Friday.
