Learning Focuses this week:

This week Mrs. Plomaritis will be coming into the classrooms to talk about Red Ribbon week and how to keep our bodies healthy.

Phonics: The spelling pattern we will focus on the long i digraph. You can tell that a word follows the pattern when the vowel says the long i sound. Some words will even have 2 vowels together to make the long i sound! Spelling words to practice at home this week are: bright, pie, sign, high, flight, lie, brightly, lightning, tighten, frighten. Please practice other words that follow this pattern as well. Our spelling dictation test will have a mixture of the practiced spelling words, as well as words we will have practiced during instruction time to see your child's application of the pattern.

Reading: We will be starting the second nine weeks by focusing on identifying the sequence of events. Students will be asked to read passages and identify the sequence of events. They will be asked to look for the signal words and other key information that identify order.

Grammar: We will be focusing on irregular plurals as we work with our mentor sentence. The following are examples of irregular plurals that the students will be familiar with: new word (tooth-> teeth), y to ies, no change (fish). We will also talk about root words. Students will be able to identify the root, meaning, and an example.

Writing: With a new nine weeks comes a new writing focus. We will shift our focus from narrative writing to informational writing. We will start the unit by learning about what informational writing is and what all is included. We will practice informational writing by writing an All About Me book.

Math: Students will be working on two step problem solving to 20. We will continue to use the 4 square where they are to produce a picture, number sentence, strategy and explanation in words as to how they found their solution. For two step word problems they will have to identify what comes first and what comes second. We will have a little fun with practicing word problems by become construction workers.

Social Studies: We will be learning about goods and services this week. Students will be able to distinguish whether something is a goods or service. Goods are items people can buy; for example food or clothes. While services are things people do for others; for example, teaching, cleaning, or nursing.
