Our Harvest Lunch is November 10th. Please return your Harvest letters as soon as possible so the school can get a head count and be prepared for the big day.

Phonics: The spelling pattern this week will focus on the ar pattern. Remind students that the vowel is neither long nor short, and that when the letter r follows a vowel, it affects the sound that the vowel stands for. Spelling words to practice at home this week are: smart, scar, shark, start, star, spark, market, garlic, party. Please practice other words that follow this pattern as well. Our spelling dictation test will have a mixture of the practiced spelling words, as well as words we will have practiced during instruction time to see your child's application of the pattern.

Reading: This week we will be focusing on identifying the importance of a text through the sequence of events. As you read at home with your child discuss the the beginning, middle, and end — and also the ability to retell the events within a given text in the order in which they occurred. The ability to sequence events in a text is a key comprehension strategy, especially for narrative texts.

Grammar: We have been discussing prefixes and suffixes and how they change the meaning of words. We will finish up with both this week. We will also focus on plural nouns through our mentor sentence for the week.

Writing: We continue this week focusing on informational writing. We will research pumpkins and write an informational piece using the research that we gathered.

Math: We will continue learning strategies to add 2 digit numbers. Both with no regroup and also learning to regroup. The strategies that we are learning are decomposing, chunking, and base ten block while adding 2 digit numbers. Ask your child to demonstrate what they have learned and to show off their skills using the strategies they have learned.

Science: We will be learning about energy sources this week. Heat, light, and sound are all forms of energy. Heat can be transferred by radiation, conduction and convection. Visible light can be produced, reflected, refracted, and separated into light of various colors. Sound is created by vibration and cannot travel through a vacuum. Pitch is determined by the vibration rate of the sound source. We will learn about each of these forms of energy through fun experimets.
