Our Harvest Lunch is November 10th. Please return your Harvest letters as soon as possible so the school can get a head count and be prepared for the big day.

Next week Mrs. Plomaritis will visit the classrooms to talk about peer pressure and how to resist it

Phonics: The spelling pattern this week will focus on the or pattern. Remind students that the vowel is neither long nor short, and that when the letter r follows a vowel, it affects the sound that the vowel stands for. Spelling words to practice at home this week are: score, fort, horn, shore, short, thorn, before, forest, hornet . Please practice other words that follow this pattern as well. Our spelling dictation test will have a mixture of the practiced spelling words, as well as sight words and other words we will have practiced during instruction time to see your child's application of the pattern.

Reading: Our reading skill will be summarizing text using story elements (characters, setting, problem and solution). The standard is for students to be able to retell the beginning, middle and ending of a story or passage in their words using these elements. This is a great skill to practice at home after their 20 minutes of reading!

Grammar: We will be starting a unit on contractions. A contraction is a shortened version of the written and spoken forms of a word, using an apostrophe to take the place of letters and sounds. Ex. can not- can't you will- you'll

Writing: We will be using the fun activities from Pumpkin Centers to continue our work with informational writing. Students will be picking out of one of the activities: carving a pumpkin, making upside down pumpkin pie, or a pumpkin craft to write a How To Paper. This piece of writing is not only informational but continued practice with sequence of events!

Math: This week we will be learning strategies to subtract 2 digit numbers both with no regrouping and regrouping. For regrouping we will be using the reference of a traffic light to decide. A red light problem is one in which the bottom digit in the ones place is bigger than the top, a yellow light problem is when the amount of ones is the same in both numbers and a green light problem is when the top digit in the ones place is bigger than the bottom. The strategies that we will use to solve are decomposing (place value), chunking(open number line), and base ten blocks. Ask your child to demonstrate what they have learned and to show off their skills using multiple strategies. The standard for 2nd quarter is for students to correctly solve these 2 digit problems using multiple strategies.

Science: We will be finishing up some fun experiments for energy related to heat, sound and light and then move on to forces of motion focusing on pushes and pulls. The Science lab has some fun activities planned for us related to motion and the students will also be working on a fun project in the learning commons soon!
