Food Drive: November 7th-18th. This year Davis Elementary will be partnering again with Must Ministries to help meet the needs of students & their families right here in the East Cobb Area. We are asking each child to assist his/her homeroom in collecting 100 food or toiletry items. To add some fun to the drive, the class in each grade who brings in the most items will receive a special prize. Please help us meet our goal of collecting 2600 items by November 18th. A sheet was sent home with a list of items wanted. We want second grade to be the grade level with the most items brought in! Thank you in advance for your support!!
Election Theme Day: On Monday, November 7th we are going to have an election theme day in honor of the 2016 Presidential Election. Students will learn about the election process and qualifications to be President and to vote. We will have several opportunities in class for students to vote on particular things, for example, an Oreo cookie vs Chips Ahoy cookie. We will analyze our voting data using different types of graphs. As we may discuss the upcoming election we will not specifically focus on the candidates running or share our opinions about them; our goal is just to teach students about how an election works in general.
Phonics: We will not have a spelling test this week due to it being a short week. Instead we will have the students work with election themed words. The words students will work on during word work are President, debate, vote, ballot, November, United States, election, poll, campaign, Vice President
Reading: Our reading skill will continue to be summarizing text using story elements (characters, setting, problem and solution). The standard is for students to be able to retell the beginning, middle and ending of a story or passage in their words using these elements. This is a great skill to practice at home after their 20 minutes of reading!
Grammar: We will continue our unit on contractions. A contraction is a shortened version of the written and spoken forms of a word, using an apostrophe to take the place of letters and sounds. Ex. can not- can't you will- you'll. We will finish our unit by performing contraction surgery.
Writing: We will be doing a fun Thanksgiving turkey writing activity where students will write from the point of view of a turkey who will try to persuade their reader not to eat turkey for Thanksgiving. We will also start researching topics for an informational book. Students will pick their own topic and gather notes to produce an informational book independently.
Math: This week we will be practicing the strategies we learned to subtract 2 digit numbers both with no regrouping and regrouping. We will continue to reference a traffic light to help us determine the type of subtraction problems. A red light problem is one in which the bottom digit in the ones place is bigger than the top, a yellow light problem is when the amount of ones is the same in both numbers and a green light problem is when the top digit in the ones place is bigger than the bottom. The strategies that we use to solve are decomposing (place value), chunking(open number line), and base ten blocks. Ask your child to demonstrate what they have learned and to show off their skills using multiple strategies. The standard for 2nd quarter is for students to correctly solve these 2 digit problems using multiple strategies.
Science: We will be starting a unit on force and motion. Force means using energy to do work. Pushing and pulling are kinds of work. Motion is the change in position of an object because of a force. To reiterate these concepts we will be doing experiments where we will explore friction, gravity, affect of mass on force, and how pushes affect how objects move.
