February 20-24: No School-Winter Break
Phonics: Spelling pattern for the week are words with the oo (spelled with ou, ew, oo, ue) sound. Here are the words to study: brew, soup, cartoon, blue, pursue, group, clue, shoe, mildew, and cashew. Remember that challenge words will be different words that but contain the oo patterns.
High Frequency Words: through, enough, off, soon, try, why
Reading: As we begin the 3rd 9 weeks, we continue to review and practice asking and answering questions while reading. This helps us understand stories and creates deep thinkers. Practice this at home by asking questions before, during and after reading. Write your questions down and check to see if you can answer them by the end of the book.
*Parents can ask questions, too!
Grammar: For the next couple of weeks we will be learning about adjectives and adverbs. The students will need to identify these as well as use them correctly when expanding sentences.
Writing: Everyone has an opinion, right? The students in 2nd grade will be learning how to state their opinion while writing. This includes supporting the opinion with facts to persuade someone to agree. Our first writing piece is where the students will choose their favorite season. Ask your child to tell you which one they would choose and why.
Math: As the new quarter begins, we review place value. Each time we focus on bigger numbers, their value, and comparing them. We are up to 3 digits! This quarter we will have Mental Math Mondays and Thinking Thursdays. On Mondays we will review strategies that help us add one digit numbers fluently, while on Thursdays we will focus on word problems.
Social Studies: Our Georgia hero for this month is Martin Luther KIng, Jr. The students will learn about him, why he is important, and the difference that he made in Georgia, the USA, and the world!
