Reading: We will begin practicing recounting stories. This skill is a retell or summarizing skill using story elements such as characters, setting, problem, solution. We will be using fairy tales, folktales and fables to practice recounting stories as well as identifying the underlying message and looking at different characters points of view.
Grammar: We are still working on sentence structure. The students are busy creating sentences with an appropriate subject and predicate, and then expanding them using adjectives, adverbs and even conjunctions for compound sentences.
Writing: Everyone has an opinion, right? The students in 2nd grade will be learning how to state their opinion while writing. This includes supporting the opinion with facts to persuade someone to agree. Our next writing piece is where the students will choose their favorite subject. This week we will be expanding on our reasons with an example for each one. Look for their favorite season piece to be coming home sometime this week.
Math: The students worked very hard on adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers last quarter. We will begin using the strategies decomposing, chunking and base 10 to add and subtract 3 digit numbers this week. As a second grade standard, the students need to use these strategies to support their answers.
Social Studies: We will begin a unit on rules and laws and government. The students will be learning about what the government is, who are the different types of leaders, why rules and laws are important and even creating their own town in which they will govern and provide laws for!
