This weeks focus:
Phonics: Our spelling pattern for the week are words with the consonant -le, al, or el syllable patterns. Here are the words to study: puddle, saddle, battle, table, noble, bridle, nickel, label, global, and rival. Remember that challenge words will be different words that but contain the same sounds. High Frequency Words: along, winner, racer, steering, fear, finish.
Reading: We will begin practicing comparing and contrasting fairy tales. We will use a venn-diagram to talk about how the versions of the same fairy tale are similar and different. We will continue to talk about story elements and identifying the beginning, middle, and end of stories.
Grammar: We will be introducing the idea of shades of meaning. Which is "Some words mean almost the same thing but have small differences between the meanings of each. Understanding the small differences between similar words lets you appreciate the shades of meaning between words or phrases." For example: small, tiny, and miniature. We will be identifying which words are weak, average, and strong.
Writing: "Writing is the best subject we learn about in school." Yes, that is an opinion and we are going to continue to work on expressing our opinion through writing. We are making sure we are supporting the opinion with facts to persuade someone to agree. The students will get to pick their new opinion writing topic this week. We will be expanding on our reasons with an example for each one. We are also looking at editing our writing and being able to identify misspelled words and where we left out capital letters and punctuation. Look for their favorite subject piece to be coming home sometime this week.
Math: We are going to be working on applying the double-digit subtraction strategies we know to subtract 3 digit numbers. We will practice using base ten and count back(chunking). As a second grade standard, the students need to use these strategies to support their answers.
Science: Will the groundhog see its shadow? This week we are going to learn all about shadows. We are first going to explore with shadows seeing how they change throughout the day. Then we will dive into learning why that is. We will learn that the earth's rotation affects where the sun is shinning so we could technically use our shadows to tell time if we used a sundial. We will be doing a fun STEM Groundhog Day activity where they will have to build a structure to make sure the groundhog doesn't see his shadow at a certain time.
