Grammar: This week we continue to work on nouns vs. proper nouns. The important thing to remember is that common nouns are general names. Thus, they are not capitalized unless they begin a sentence or are part of a title. Proper nouns, those that name specific things, do require capitalization.
Spelling: For the first week of spelling we are focusing on the CVCe pattern (which is the long e pattern). Here is the regular word list: crate, stroke, glide, woke, plate, pride, reptile, naptime, mistake. The high frequency words are 2nd grade words that need to be spelled correctly when writing. They are: another, don't, kind, put, saw, sound. Some students have a modified list. These words are: kite, bike, rode, fate, mope, tape, note, ride, made, gape. The sight words they should practice are: see, was, of. They may be asked to spell nonsense words that follow the pattern as well. For example: vite, sate, dade, lide, gope, sape.
Reading: Our reading focus this week is identifying the beginning, middle and end of a story. Then, we will work on the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why). These strategies help us to become a better reader and what do good readers do. We will continue building reading stamina and rolling out the Daily 5 model.
Writing: As we continue to work on stamina we look at the final traits of writing- there are six (ideas, voice, word choice, organization, sentence fluency and conventions). When these traits are used our writing looks and sounds much better!
Math: As we review place value, we also look at comparing numbers. This is when we use greater than, less than and equal signs. We will be comparing numbers in different forms as well. For example- 328 < 300 + 80 + 2. Knowing how to identify numbers in different ways helps us with comparing.
Science: We had so much fun with shadows and now we will look into how it effects our seasons. As we look at seasons we look at how things change around us.
