Grammar: This week our focus will be on Plural Nouns. A plural noun is a word that indicates that there is more than one person, animal place, thing, or idea. When you talk about more than one of anything, you're using plural nouns. When you write about more than one of anything, you usually use the same word, simply adding an s, es, or ies to the end.
Spelling: Spelling this week will focus on Open Syllable Patterns, one and two syllable words. An open syllable occurs when a vowel is at the end of the syllable, resulting in the long vowel sound, e.g. pa/per, e/ven, o/pen, go & we. Here is the regular word list: cry, go, she, fly, we, so, baby, robot, tidy. The high frequency words are 2nd grade words that need to be spelled correctly when writing. They are: because, done, don't, know, once, together. Some students have a modified list. These words are: she, he, no, so, go, we, banjo, bingo, combo. The sight words they should practice are: done, know, there.
Reading: We are finishing up the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why). These strategies help us to become a better reader and what do good readers do. We will continue building reading stamina and rolling out the Daily 5 model.
Writing: As we continue to work on stamina we look at the final traits of writing- there are six (ideas, voice, word choice, organization, sentence fluency and conventions). When these traits are used our writing looks and sounds much better! We will also start talking about what is a personal narrative.
Math: This week we will focus on skip counting. Skip counting is often called counting by 2s or by 5s or by 10s or by 100s. Skip counting really helps with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It is also used a lot for counting things – counting pairs of gloves, groups of five, money, boxes with 100 cans in each box – the list goes on!
Science: What a great week to discuss the moon! We will talk about the solar eclipse that is taking place on Monday and then the phases of the moon the rest of the week. We will use the Kidspiration to enter our moon facts that we will collect during the week.
Important Dates for August:
August 21st-45 minute delay/Solar Eclipse
August 29th-Bruster's Spirit Night
August 30th-Early release day 12:30
