Grammar: This week we will continue with Plural Nouns and finish up on Friday.. A plural noun is a word that indicates that there is more than one person, animal place, thing, or idea. When you talk about more than one of anything, you're using plural nouns. When you write about more than one of anything, you usually use the same word, simply adding an s, es, or ies to the end.
Spelling: Spelling this week will focus on Long a digraph syllable patterns. A digraph is two letters that spell one sound. Digraphs that spell consonant sounds include the letter pairs sh, ch, th, wh, ck, ph, ng. Digraphs that spell vowel sounds include the letter pairs ai, ay, ee, ea, ie, ei, oo, ou. ow, oe, oo, ue, ey, ay, oy, oi, au, aw. Here is the regular word list: train, stay, eight, sprain, tray, freight, complain, obey, raisin. The high frequency words are 2nd grade words that need to be spelled correctly when writing. They are: along, both, idea, off, together, went, walk. Some students have a modified list: may, stay, play, hay, rain, pain, brain, paint. The sight words they should practice are: all, with.
Reading: We are learning to ask/answer questions and identifying main ideas in a story. To figure out the main idea, ask yourself this question: What is being said about the person, thing, or idea (the topic)? We will also continue building reading stamina and rolling out the Daily 5 model.
Writing: We will use the six traits of writing in our personal narrative this 9 weeks. A personal narrative is an experience usually told in first person; its content is nontraditional. Personal refers to a story from your life or your own experiences.
Math: This week we will learn different strategies to help us add and subtract. We will be discussing fact families, adding doubles, near doubles and using 10 frames and chips to practice making a 10.
Social Studies: Our focus this week is learning about the different regions of Georgia. In a couple of weeks we will end the unit with a great hands on activity showing what we have learned about each region.
