Grammar: We will focus on Shades of Meaning this week. How can you tell the difference between the words 'mad' and 'upset'? Both show emotion, but one is stronger than the other. Shades of meaning distinguish, or tell the difference between similar words. Think of your favorite color. Is it blue? Red? Green? Whatever it is, that color has multiple different shades. For instance, the color blue could be broken down into sky blue, midnight blue, or ocean blue, just to name a few. Just like colors, words have different shades, too. These are called shades of meaning. This color palette shows different shades of colors. Words like colors can have different shades of meaning. Shades of meaning can describe what we are feeling or thinking. They help us to see which word shows a stronger meaning
Spelling: Spelling this week will focus on Irregular plurals. Here is the irregular word list: sheep, deer, teeth, women, dozen, traffic, moose, geese, oxen. The high frequency words are 2nd grade words that need to be spelled correctly when writing. They are: almost, animal, every, few, group, might, school. Some students have a modified list: deer, teeth, feet, men, mice, geese, oxen . The sight words they should practice are: almost, few, group.
Reading: We will focus on Fairy tales this week. A fairy tale is a type of short story that typically features folkloric fantasy characters, such as dwarfs, dragons, elves, fairies, giants, gnomes, goblins, griffins, mermaids, talking animals, trolls, unicorns, or witches, and usually magic or enchantments. We will continue learning how to identify the central message, lesson, moral, and point of view of a story. We will also compare and contrast story elements such as characters, settings, and events.
Writing: This 9 weeks focus will be Opinion Writing. The purpose of an opinion piece is to convince your audience to agree with your opinion. Introduce the topic or issue. State your opinion clearly. Give more than one reason to support your opinion. We will continue working on our opinion pieces.
Math: We will finish up adding 3 digit numbers this week and starting on subtracting 3 digit numbers. Please do some practice problems at home. Some of the students are struggling with regrouping.
