Week of April 30th

Grammar: We will focus on prefixes this week. A prefix is an affix which is placed before the stem of a word. Adding it to the beginning of one word changes it into another word. For example, when the prefix un- is added to the word happy, it creates the word unhappy.

Spelling: Spelling this week will focus on the prefix-dis. Here is the regular list: disorder, disagree, distrust, dishonest, disgrace, disappear. The high frequency words are 2nd grade words that need to be spelled correctly when writing. They are: being, family, miss, off, plant, until, well. Some students have a modified list: display, dislike, discard, disable, disgrace, disrupt. The sight words they should practice are: family, miss, well.

Reading: We will continue our focus on Comparing and Contrasting different stories this week. To contrast something is to look for differences among two or more elements, but compare is to do the opposite, to look for similarities.

Writing: This 9 weeks we will be working all three genres of writing: Narrative, Opinion, and Informational. At this time we are working on narrative writing.

Math: We will be working on partitioning shapes this week. We will partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. We will also recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.

Science: We will be focusing on the Life Cycle of a Plant this week. The plant starts life as a seed, which germinates and grows into a plant. The mature plant produces flowers, which are fertilizes and produce seeds in a fruit or seedpod. The plant eventually dies, leaving seeds which germinate to produce new plants. Annuals take one year to complete their life cycle.
