Week of August 13

Grammar: We will continue focusing on common and proper nouns. Nouns name people, places, and things. A common noun names general items. Proper nouns, those that name specific things, do require capitalization. Students will be assessed on Friday.

Spelling: We will be working on CVC Syllable Patterns this week. Green Words: dad, log, hot, dog, tag, ham, mat, lad, cat, bad, hog, mad. Nonsense Words: fod, lod, mag, cog, cad, dod, gad, hod, tam. Red Words: the, is, and, school, class.

Reading: We will be learning to identify main idea in a story. The main idea is the point of the paragraph. It is the most important thought about the topic. To figure out the main idea, ask yourself this question: What is being said about the person, thing, or idea (the topic)? The author can locate the main idea in different places within a paragraph. The main idea is usually a sentence, and it is usually the first sentence. The writer then uses the rest of the paragraph to support the main idea.

Writing: This 9 weeks we will focus on narrative writing. We will finish up discussing 6 +1 Traits of Writing and building stamina this week.

Math: We will continue learning how to represent numbers differently through number form, base 10 form, expanded form, and word form. Number form=134, base ten form= using base ten blocks, expanded form=100 + 30 +4, and word form=one hundred thirty four.

Science: We will be focusing on the properties of matter and how matter changes. Matter is everything around you. Atoms and compounds are all made of very small parts of matter. Those atoms go on to build the things you see and touch every day. Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space (it has volume). ... Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
