Grammar: We will us on Collective Nouns this week. Collective nouns are names for a collection or a number of people or things. Words like group, herd, and array are collective noun examples. You might not know it, but you encounter collective nouns in everyday speech. Collective nouns are words for single things that are made up of more than one person, animal, place, thing, or idea.
Spelling: We will be working on words that have detached syllables. Each syllables uses a short vowel sound. You can practice at home by giving your student phrases and sentences to practice. You say the sentence, have the student repeat, then pound their hand for each word they hear as they repeat with you again, then have them write. Check for capital at the beginning of the sentence, stretch the words, space the words, and punctuation at the end. Green Words: tandem, magnet, cactus, velvet, hiccup, tidbit, nutmeg, submit, witness, picnic, happen, public. Nonsense Words: pognet, cotnit, hatpeg, nonpish, chupvet, thintup, zutwin, gatbit, sudfin. Red Words: take, who, here, my, are
Reading: We will continue to focus on analyzing characters in a story. Character analysis is when you evaluate a character's traits, their role in the story, and the conflicts they experience.When analyzing, you will want to think critically, ask questions, and draw conclusions about the character by looking at those three areas.
Writing: This 9 weeks we will focus on narrative writing. We will begin a time when we were afraid narrative piece this week and continue working on 6+1 trait writing skills.
Math: We will focus this week on Money Word Problems. Please continue practicing at home with your child learn each coin and how much they are worth. Skip counting by 5 will help them add coins. Also, practice counting and adding coins as well. This is a hard skill for most 2nd graders.
Social Studies: This week’s focus is on government and who are elected officials are. We will identify between rules and laws. We will finish up the week with our first STEM challenge.
