Grammar:  We will be learning root words this week. A basic word to which affixes (prefixes and suffixes) are added is called a root word because it forms the basis of a new word. The root word is also a word in its own right. For example, the word lovely consists of the word love and the suffix -ly.

Spelling:  We will be working on words that have mixed blends. Mixed blends are 2 consonants blending together at the beginning of the word. You can still hear each sound the word  . You can practice at home by giving your student phrases and sentences to practice. You say the sentence, have the student repeat, then pound their hand for each word they hear as they repeat with you again, then have them write. Check for capital at the beginning of the sentence, stretch the words, space the words, and punctuation at the end. Green Words: plump, brand, crust, trust, stamp, grand, branch, bland, crisp, drift, blast, squint. Nonsense Words: trist, flump, plont, drosk, blamp, brust, prast, grust, squost. Red Words: any, they, should, busy, which.

Reading:  We will continue our focus this week on sequence of events. Sequencing refers to the identification of the components of a story — the beginning, middle, and end — and also to the ability to retell the events within a given text in the order in which they occurred. The ability to sequence events in a text is a key comprehension strategy, especially for narrative texts.

Writing:  This 9 weeks we will focus of informational writing. Informational writing is a type of nonfiction writing that conveys information about something, which means it is factual. Many examples of informational writing can be found in newspapers, almanacs, and reference books. Informational text is often organized so the reader can easily and quickly find information. This week will be working on an informational writing piece on Spiders.

Math:  We will focus on 2-digit addition. We will learn different strategies to add 2-digit numbers. We will be using base ten blocks, partial sums, number line, decomposing and expanding form. Please refer to pamphlet that was shared with you at parent conferences or you can also find it on the homepage of the Davis website. If have any questions feel free to reach out to your child's teacher.

Social Studies: This week will be learning about Sequoyah. Sequoyah was part of the Cherokee people and was a Cherokee silversmith. In 1821 he completed his independent creation of a Cherokee syllabary, making reading and writing in Cherokee possible .
