Grammar: We will be learning about Proper nouns this week. A proper noun is a specific name for a particular person, place, or thing. Proper nouns are always capitalized in English, no matter where they fall in a sentence.

Phonics: We will be working on open and close syllables. An open syllable word has one vowel, one syllable, and ends in a vowel. Examples of an open syllable word are he, she, be, go, hi, me, no, we. A closed syllable word has one vowel, one syllable, and ends in a consonant. Examples of a closed syllable word are bed, got, hen, hip, it, men, not. Please practice red words at home. Red words do not follow learned patterns or rules. Therefore it is important to memorize how to spell them. We do not sound these words out. We identify them by letter names. Example: was w-a-s not /w/ /u/ /z/. Practice at home writing the words in fun ways, tracing them, or even jumping them out.

Reading: We will be learning about ask and answering questions. We ask and answer questions when we read. It is important to ask who, what, where, when, why while reading a story. This helps the student understand the key details in the story. Please practice at home when reading a story with your child. Ask the questions throughout the story.

Writing: This 9 weeks we will learn about narrative writing and discussing how a checklist can help. As we continue to practice the routines of writing, we will review how to revise writing. A good way to revise this week at home is making sure that each sentence has a capital letter and punctuation.

Math: We will be learning how to represent numbers differently through number form, base 10 form, expanded form, and word form. Number form=134, base ten form= using base ten blocks, expanded form=100 + 30 +4, and word form=one hundred thirty four. Please study math facts at home. Timed test are given once a week.

Science: We will be focusing on the properties of matter and how matter changes. Matter is everything around you. Atoms and compounds are all made of very small parts of matter. Those atoms go on to build the things you see and touch every day. Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space (it has volume). ... Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
