Grammar: We will be learning about collective nouns. Collective nouns are names for a collection or a number of people or things. Words like group, herd, and array are collective noun examples.

Phonics: This week we will work on the floss rule. The floss rule is when a word has a short vowel and is a one-syllable word and ends with f, l, s, or z, you double the last letter. Examples of floss words: doll, mess, yell, off , quill, will. Red words for the week are: you, because, once, they. Please practice red words at home. Red words do not follow learned patterns or rules. Therefore it is important to memorize how to spell them. We do not sound these words out. We identify them by letter names. Example: was w-a-s not /w/ /u/ /z/. Practice at home writing the words in fun ways, tracing them, or even jumping them out.

Reading: We will learn about story elements. A story has five important elements. These five components are: the characters, the setting, the plot, the conflict, and the resolution. These essential elements keep the story running smoothly and allow the action to develop in a logical way that the reader can follow.

Writing: We will finish up our Boo story this week with a rough draft, editing, and then a final draft.

Math: We will continue with word problems but now the problems will include money. It is important at home to review coin. The students need to know what each coin is and the amount it is worth.

Social Studies: This week's focus will be on government and who are elected officials are. We will also identify the difference between rules and laws. We will end the week with our first STEM challenge.
