Grammar: We will be reviewing Common, Proper, Singular, Plural, Irregular, and Collective Nouns this week.
Phonics: This week we will learn about glued sounds. Glued Sounds are letters that keep their individual sound but are glued together. Examples of glued sounds: sting, fang, drink, bonk, chunk. Red words for the week are: been, really, again, know. Please practice red words at home. Red words do not follow learned patterns or rules. Therefore it is important to memorize how to spell them. We do not sound these words out. We identify them by letter names. Example: was w-a-s not /w/ /u/ /z/. Practice at home writing the words in fun ways, tracing them, or even jumping them out.
Reading: We will continue learning about context clues in reading this week. Context clues are hints that an author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word within a book. The clue may appear within the same sentence as the word to which it refers or it may follow in the next sentence. There are at least four kinds of context clues that are quite common: synonym (or repeat context clue) which appears in that sentence. Antonym (or contrast context clue) that has the opposite meaning, which can reveal the meaning of an unknown term. An explanation for an unknown word is given (a definition context clue) within the sentence or in the sentence immediately after. Specific examples (an example context clue) used to define the term.
Writing: The students have worked hard this 9 weeks on personal narratives. Now it is their turn to shine and show what they have learned by producing their own personal narrative. They will follow the same steps we have done thus far. Can't wait to see what they produce!
Math: We will be reviewing the math strategies we learned this 9 weeks.
Social Studies: This week's focus will be on Creek and Cherokee Native Americans. We will learn how they adapted to their environments, which tools they used, which Georgia region they lived in, what they grew on their land, what type of clothing they used, and the homes that they lived in.
