Important Dates:

November 20th-Spirit Wear Wednesday

November 25th-29th-Thanksgiving Break/No School

Grammar: We will be learning about plural possessives. Plural possessives indicate when there is more than one of a noun and show ownership of something. The possessive of most plural nouns is formed by adding an apostrophe only: The boys' hats.

Phonics: This week we will continue to learn about bossy r! When a vowel is followed by an r, the r changes the sound that the vowel makes. The vowel is called an r-controlled vowel. That is why we refer to the “r” as the “bossy r” because the r “bosses” the vowel to make a new sound. er says /er/ : It can be part of a word like fern, hermit, adverb, vertex. In these words the meaning is not changed by er. -er can also be a suffix: It stills says /er/ but is added to the end of a root word and changes the meaning of that word. The suffix -er compares or names a person. Red words for the week are: father, sister, said, month. Please practice red words at home. Red words do not follow learned patterns or rules. Therefore it is important to memorize how to spell them. We do not sound these words out. We identify them by letter names. Example: was w-a-s not /w/ /u/ /z/. Practice at home writing the words in fun ways, tracing them, or even jumping them out.

*Phonics assessments are on Thursday. New phonics rule introduced Friday.

Reading: We will focus this week on rhythm and alliteration. Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sounds at the beginning of words that are in close proximity to each other. This repetition of sounds brings attention to the lines in which it is used, and creates more aural rhythm.

Writing: The students will work on informational writing this 9 weeks. Informational writing is a type of nonfiction writing that conveys information about something, which means it is factual. Many examples of informational writing can be found in newspapers, almanacs, and reference books. ... Informational text is often organized so the reader can easily and quickly find information.

Math: We will be focusing on measurement word problems. Measurement using non-standard units is used to reinforce concepts and provide building blocks to understanding the use of standard measurement units. Both the customary and metric systems are covered.

*Timed addition and subtraction test are normally given on Wednesdays.

Social Studies: This week will be learning about Force of Motion. Force can be defined as a push or a pull that changes or tends to change the state of rest or uniform motion of an object or changes the direction or shape of an object. It causes objects to accelerate or add to their overall pressure. In simple terms, it is a push or a pull on an object that takes place when two objects interact. It is the basic cause of motion from rest.
