Grammar: We will be learning about suffixes. Suffixes are a letter or group of letters added to the ending of words to change their meaning or function. Examples: brotherly, sadness, treatment.
Phonics: This week we will continue to learn about bossy r with -ir and -ur. When a vowel is followed by an r, the r changes the sound that the vowel makes. The vowel is called an r-controlled vowel. That is why we refer to the “r” as the “bossy r” because the r “bosses” the vowel to make a new sound. Red words for the week are: other, come, after, great. Please practice red words at home. Red words do not follow learned patterns or rules. Therefore it is important to memorize how to spell them. We do not sound these words out. We identify them by letter names. Example: was w-a-s not /w/ /u/ /z/. Practice at home writing the words in fun ways, tracing them, or even jumping them out.
*Phonics assessments are on Thursday. New phonics rule introduced Friday.
Reading: We will continue learning this week rhythm and alliteration. Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sounds at the beginning of words that are in close proximity to each other. This repetition of sounds brings attention to the lines in which it is used, and creates more aural rhythm.
Writing: The students will work on informational writing this 9 weeks. Informational writing is a type of nonfiction writing that conveys information about something, which means it is factual. Many examples of informational writing can be found in newspapers, almanacs, and reference books. ... Informational text is often organized so the reader can easily and quickly find information.
Math: We will be focusing on time and learning about clocks. We will be focusing on time to the hour, 1/2 hour, and 5 minutes. Please practice at home using an analog clock.
*Timed addition and subtraction test are normally given on Wednesdays.
Social Studies: This week will continue learning about Force of Motion. The students will be creating arcade games. This project was inspired by Caine’s Arcade. He created his own arcade using cardboard and that is exactly what we are going to do. The students will be using what they have learned about motion (push and pull) and building a game. We are asking them to gather materials from home and bring them in. Some example materials they may need are boxes of different sizes, string, marbles, or anything they think may help them. These games do not have to be big size wise. The only requirement is that they use a push or a pull, and something changes directions. Students will start building their game Tuesday (12/3), so we need the students to have their materials by then.
