Grammar: We will be learning about adjectives this week. Adjectives are words that describe a noun. Examples: blue hat, mad cat

Phonics: We will continue working on suffixes this week.A suffix is a letter or a group of letters attached to the end of a word to form a new word or to change the grammatical function (or part of speech) of the word. For example, the verb read is made into the noun reader by adding the suffix -er. Red words for the week are: live, gone, door, only. Please practice red words at home. Red words do not follow learned patterns or rules. Therefore it is important to memorize how to spell them. We do not sound these words out. We identify them by letter names. Example: was w-a-s not /w/ /u/ /z/. Practice at home writing the words in fun ways, tracing them, or even jumping them out.

*Phonics assessments are on Thursday. The new phonics rule is introduced on Friday.

Reading: We will be working on the 5 W's + H during Reading. 5 W's + H (who, what, where, when, why, how) is a method of asking questions about a process or a problem taken up for improvement. Four of the W’s (who, what, where, when) and the one H is used to comprehend for details, analyze inferences and judgment to get to the fundamental facts and guide statements to get to the abstraction. The last W (why) is often asked five times so that one can drill down to get to the core of a problem.

Writing: This week we will be talking about New Year's Resolutions/Goals. The students will chose several goals that they would like to accomplish this 9 weeks and write about it.

Math: We will working on place value this week. We will be showing numbers in different forms. Ex: expanded form, standard form, word form, and base ten blocks.

*Timed addition and subtraction test are normally given on Wednesdays.

Health: In class this week we will be discussing teeth and how to take care of them and the importance of taking care of our teeth.
